Rally shipped a native 2D Matrix Widget for Custom Views, documented in the Q2 2026 release notes. It displays artifact counts across two configurable dimensions, and Broadcom's own release notes describe it as a tool to help teams "transition from legacy custom pages to modern Custom Views."
That phrasing is not accidental. Broadcom is telling you why this widget exists.
What It Does
You pick two attributes, the widget shows you a grid of artifact counts. That's the whole pitch.
- Rows and columns can be any combination of attributes Rally supports for grouping (project, team, work type, state, owner, custom fields)
- Each cell shows the count of matching artifacts
- Click a cell to drill into the underlying work items
- Filter the whole matrix by a query, just like every other Custom Views widget
If you've ever built a pivot table in a spreadsheet from a Rally export, this is the live, in-Rally version of that.
Why This Matters
Cross-tab artifact views were one of the most common things teams built on the old App SDK. Stories by team and state. Defects by severity and project. Features by release and risk. Pick any two attributes a stakeholder wanted to see together and someone wrote a Custom Page for it.
Those Custom Pages stop working when the App SDK reaches end of life on October 31, 2026. The 2D Matrix Widget is now the official answer for the basic version of that view.
For more complex pivots, weighted counts, calculated metrics in cells, conditional formatting based on thresholds, anything that goes beyond a count-by-two-attributes grid, the migration path is still a Custom HTML Widget rebuild. But before you scope a custom build, see if the native widget already covers what you need. It will more often than you'd think.
Where to Find It
It's in the widget catalog when you edit a Custom View. Look for "2D Matrix" in the picker. No subscription admin enablement required.
Need Help Migrating?
We've spent enough time inside Custom Pages code that we can usually tell within a few minutes whether the native widget covers a given view. If your team has a stack of pivot-style Custom Pages and you're trying to figure out which ones rebuild themselves and which ones don't, let's talk.

Two attributes, one widget, zero App SDK. That's a good trade.
