Rally shipped a native Velocity/Throughput Widget for Custom Views on April 6, 2026. It's the first documented feature in the Q2 2026 release notes, and it quietly closes one of the bigger gaps in the App SDK migration story.
If your team built a custom velocity chart on the old App SDK at some point in the last decade, and almost every team did, Rally just gave you an official replacement.
What It Does
The widget can show either velocity (story points) or throughput (story count) for schedulable work items. You configure it once and pick the bucketing that matches how your team actually plans:
- Bucket by Iteration or Release
- Optionally stack by a distribution attribute (project, team, work type, etc.)
- Trend lines and rolling averages built in
- Drill into any time bucket to see the underlying work items
The standard use cases are all there: capacity planning, velocity trend analysis, planned-vs-actual retrospective review.
Why This Matters
Velocity and throughput dashboards are the kind of thing every team builds early and never throws away. They were one of the first custom apps people wrote on the App SDK, which means they're also one of the most common things sitting in someone's "we'll deal with that later" pile as the October 31, 2026 App SDK end of life approaches.
For the basic case, show me velocity by iteration with a trend line, you can now delete the custom app and use the native widget. No code, no maintenance, no dependency on App SDK 2.1 surviving past Halloween.
For more complex velocity dashboards, multi-team rollups, custom calculations, weird filters that someone added in 2018 and forgot to document, the migration path is still a Custom HTML Widget rebuild. But the native widget covers more ground than most teams expect, and it's worth a look before you scope a custom build.
Where to Find It
It's in the widget catalog when you edit a Custom View. Look for "Velocity/Throughput" in the widget picker. Subscription admins don't need to enable anything, it's available everywhere.
Need Help Migrating?
We've been replacing App SDK velocity apps for years. If your team has one (or twelve) sitting in production and you're not sure whether the native widget covers what you need, let's talk. We'll tell you what's a drop-in replacement and what isn't.
